A major in finance complemented with a minor in legal studies is preparing this already accomplished student for a career in the commercial real estate industry.

Joshua Velez ’17 says Financial Services is one of the “most well-rounded majors” Bryant has to offer.

“You’re touching everything here,” he says. “There are marketing classes, finance classes, legal classes, accounting classes. Not every major has that opportunity to touch so many facets of business and I knew immediately once I saw those class requirements that that was the major for me.”

Velez, who aims to enter the commercial real estate industry, says his Financial Services concentration “complemented perfectly” with his minor, Legal Studies.

“They went hand in hand,” he says. “One of my Financial Services requirements was a law class, so it just made sense to seek out more legal classes that related back to my major.”

Velez says he originally wanted to pursue a career in wealth management, but his classes at Bryant helped him decide on a different path — one that puts him face-to-face with clients.

“I want to talk to people, get outside and conduct business. I believe Financial Services gave me the best of both worlds with a really good background in finance coupled with the legal background in business. It allows me to do anything.”

Velez is already well accomplished. He was the President of the Bryant Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization, which was named one of the top three in the nation in 2016. He also has completed internships at The Bulfinch Group and CBRE/New England, the latter of which he received through the Amica Center for Career Education.

“It was amazing. I saw it on the career center website and I applied and received a phone call the next day,” he says. “Two weeks later I received the internship.”

The idea that anything is possible is something Velez believes is instilled in the culture at Bryant.

“There are very few places in the world that have the ability to shape who you are, and help you to develop as a person,” he says. “People always say college is really a place where you find yourself, but I feel like that sentiment is truer than ever at Bryant. The tight-knit community, the size of our school, the quality of our professors and the quality of the people who are creates an atmosphere of success.”
