Lookman Buky Folami, Ph.D.
On campus and off, Professor Folami is known for service. He has served on a raft of Bryant committees that allowed him to refine the accounting curriculum, serve as a mentor to students, and select candidates for faculty searches. Folami also serves as a board member or advisor for the Rhode Island Association of CPAs, the National Association of Black Accountants, and the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
Giving is a trait that comes from his father, a businessman in his native Nigeria. “He donated money and land to build churches, and every Friday once a month he’d put out a feast for the neighbors,” Folami said. “He sent food to the elderly and gave candy to kids. He died when I was 13, but I didn’t forget his example.”
“I believe in giving back,” he says. “The opportunity to make a positive difference in somebody else’s life and my community is a sacred obligation. All of us enjoy what we have today because of the people that gave before us.”
A prolific researcher and writer, Folami’s publications cover a variety of topics that share one thread – practicality. Cash management, risk management, and job satisfaction are frequent subjects of study, as is the role of financial expert witnesses.
Folami has run an active consulting practice, offering expert advice in forensic accounting, general accounting, and financial management to companies in several sectors, from health care to entertainment.
“I love and am committed to the accounting profession,” he says. “Consulting keeps me grounded in the classroom. It gives me examples of practical applications for my students, those real examples of ‘here’s how you do it’ and ‘here’s why it matters.’”
