When Lelani Bonner '07 of East Providence, RI investigated colleges, she was intrigued by the growing visibility of Bryant and its programs throughout the state. "That really sparked my interest in the university," she recalls.

After talking with Bryant graduates and doing her own research, she determined that Bryant "would be academically challenging and stimulating."

In May 2007, she earned a degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing.

While at Bryant, she put her marketing knowledge to use at Leadership Rhode Island (LRI), an educational non-profit based in Providence, and served as program associate.

While at Bryant, Bonner helped coordinate program events, meetings, and sessions and served as the operational lead staff person on site at LRI events. She also participated in planning meetings and facilitated portions of session activities;designed promotional and informational materials for LRI programs; and assisted with technology needs.

As one of only six people on the staff of LRI, Bonner is able to see first hand how the organization fits into the landscape of the state. In the last 25 years, more than 1,200 professionals (alumni range from NBC-10's Frank Coletta to gubernatorial candidate Charles Fogarty) have completed the yearlong leadership program. In the past several years, programs have been developed for women in politics and college students.

"It's really motivating when you realize that your job is helping the overall progress of the state," she says.

There are over 1,400 nonprofit organizations in Rhode Island and one of their biggest needs is people with business backgrounds.

"Having essential business skills will help when running or working for a non-profit," she says.

Bonner's Bryant education was critical in giving her these skills. "The professors expect a lot out of the students, but the knowledge gained in the end makes it is all worthwhile," she says. "Overall, Bryant is a great school for anyone who is ready to work hard and be challenged."

Resources like ACE, Academic Advising and Career Services are also essential in helping students succeed, says Bonner.

"I have found that Bryant has exceeded all of my expectations."
