Students embrace all that Bryant has to offer
Center for Student Involvement gives Spotlight Awards to those who help foster student life at Bryant.
Sherika Nicholas ’11 (East Patchogue, NY) says that what intrigues her about the various cultural programs on campus is that she is able to help promote an appreciation of diversity and explain to others what it means to her.
One of the ways she does this is through The Bottom Line, Bryant’s a cappella group.
“I enjoy being able to express myself through the music that I write and perform,” says Nicholas. “The members of the Bryant community are very supportive and encouraging.”
A sociology and service learning major, Nicholas is also a sprinter on Bryant’s track and field team, a member of the Multicultural Student Union, and a Women’s Center assistant.
“Each of these activities reinforces responsibility and the importance of good communication skills,” she says. “It’s necessary to be dedicated to everything that you do.”
In recognition of her ability to balance all of these commitments and excel in and out of the classroom, Nicholas is the most recent recipient of the Center for Student Involvement Spotlight Award.
After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in education and would like to one day establish her own non-profit organization for underprivileged children. “I believe that the values, skills, and characteristics I have developed through participating in these activities at Bryant are great attributes for any career that I wish to pursue,” she says.
Building relationships
A regular presence on campus, senior Matthew DeFeudis’ list of affiliations reads like a laundry list: comedy chair of the Student Programming Board, co-vice president of Beta Gamma Sigma, vice president of the Italian American Association, and a member of President Ronald K. Machtley’s Senior Advisory Council, the Honors Program, and Omicron Delta Kappa.
The West Boylston, MA, native says he most appreciates the relationships he has forged through his work in the classroom and in the Bryant community.
“I have always enjoyed the opportunity to meet students, faculty, staff, and administrators at Bryant,” he says. “I am always looking to make new connections and build new friendships. It is a great feeling to see so many familiar faces while walking around campus.”
The marketing and management double concentrator hopes to work in advertising after graduation. He believes it is his work on campus that helped him develop leadership skills and gave him real-life practice in problem solving, team building, and being creative.
“I am a strong believer in learning from your experiences,” he says. “Looking back, I greatly appreciate how my involvement on campus helped me learn and grow as an individual.”
