Bryant hosts regional conference of expert researchers in decision making

Several Bryant faculty members are presenting papers at the Northeast Decision Sciences Institute, which is being chaired by Associate CIS Professor Kenneth Sousa.

Research and academic conferences are instrumental in helping faculty members pursue lifelong learning, says Professor Kenneth Sousa.

"Expanding our knowledge and testing new ideas and concepts helps develop quality faculty and, as a result, strong students," says Sousa, associate professor of computer information systems.

As the host of the Northeast Decision Sciences Institute 2009 Annual Conference from April 1-3, Bryant’s College of Business is bringing together top experts in the application of quantitative and behavioral methods to solve problems. More than 150 people, some from as far away as Taiwan, will attend the three-day conference at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. Sousa is the conference chair.

Academic conferences like this provide a great forum for academicians to interact, share research, and stay up-to-date on the latest findings in their fields, says Sousa.

"Business opportunities, tactics, and strategies change in a dynamic manner and at an expeditious pace," he says. "This work helps the faculty remain current while providing new ideas and contemporary issues to integrate into the classroom experience."

Scholarly exchange
Teams of Bryant faculty members will present 10 papers at the conference, which will include more than 120 competitively judged papers in 14 tracks or subject areas such as accounting, finance and real estate, and marketing and e-commerce. Madan Annavarjula, associate professor of management and coordinator of Bryant’s International Business program, is chair of the international business track; John Visich, associate professor of management, is chair of the services and health care management track; and James Bishop, professor of mathematics, is chair of the statistical theory and applications track. Janet Prichard, associate professor of CIS, is the local arrangements chair.

"The feedback from our research presentations is essential to gain some objective and constructive comments, ultimately to build a stronger manuscript for submission to a peer-review journal," says Sousa. "The additional exposure can also create business partnerships and opportunities to further expand our reach and reputation."

Alan Olinsky, professor of mathematics, will present two papers at the conference. One, co-authored in collaboration with Mathematics Professor Phyllis Schumacher, compares and contrasts different statistical techniques for predictive modeling. The second, which he co-authored with Mathematics Professor Kristin Kennedy and a colleague from Salve Regina University, examines differences in financial reporting standards in the United States and Europe.

Many of the ideas for Olinsky's research come about while developing classroom lectures. "This resulting research often leads to a modification and refinement of my teaching," he says.

One of the Bryant papers, "The Effects of Outliers on Consumer Choice," started as an Honors Program capstone project for Denise Fuda ’08. Associate Professor of Marketing Carol Demoranville, Fuda's advisor for the project, will present the findings.

Suhong Li and Chen Zhang, associate and assistant professors of CIS respectively, will present a paper that investigates the impact that gender, information privacy concern, and computer anxiety may have on a person's online purchasing behaviors.

"My research is related to supply chain management and the adoption and implementation of IT innovation," explains Li. "These topics are very relevant and they are a good supplement in my teaching."
