12th Women's Summit to be held March 12 on Bryant campus
Nearly 1,000 people are expected to attend the 2009 Women's Summit, "Champions in a Changing Environment," chaired by Kati Machtley.
Valerie Littlefield '86 understood the value of the Women's Summit from the first time she attended six years ago. She has returned each year since and last year she had the opportunity to be part of a panel discussion titled "Don’t Derail Your Success: WIN Everyday Negotiations."
"There is always something to be gained by listening to successful women talk about their professional and personal journeys," says Littlefield, manager of organizational quality services at AIPSO, a Johnston, RI-based nonprofit organization that provides expertise in insurance, management, and statistical analysis.
The 12th Women's Summit, which is chaired by Kati Machtley, will take place Thursday, March 12, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Bryant. The Platinum sponsor is The Amica Companies.
"Inspiration and education comes from the variety of people you get to listen to," says Littlefield, who has also manned a vendor table at the Women's Summit as part of her role as president of the Executive Women's Golf Association of Rhode Island. "Their stories can provide a perspective that helps you with your own career."
Embracing change
This year's conference will feature three prominent speakers who personify excellence and success.
Mireille Guiliano, a ground-breaking entrepreneur and internationally respected marketing innovator served as president and CEO of the esteemed wine and champagne company Clicquot, Inc. for 20 years.
Jean Chatzky, award-winning journalist and best-selling author, has created a global platform that is making significant strides in helping millions of men and women battle an epidemic with a devastating impact – debt.
Dominique Dawes, the first African American to compete as a member of the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team, is a renowned public speaker. Dawes works tirelessly to inspire high self-esteem in girls and women alike as spokesperson for The Girl Scouts/Unilever Self-Esteem Program and the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty.
"Embracing and managing change for professional and personal success is essential especially in this time of economic uncertainty," says Kati Machtley, chair of the Women's Summit. "After attending this conference, we hope that you will be inspired to become a champion in a changing environment."
The Women's Summit will also feature 19 educational presentations and panels lead by prominent women who are experts and leaders in their field. The sessions are designed to appeal to women at various levels of career development – from new professionals to those in senior executive positions. Nearly 1,000 people are expected to attend the daylong conference, which sells out each year.
Network of experts
Regina Mead '84, a mover and shaker who runs three companies, makes time to attend the Women's Summit and always leaves with new ideas to bring back to her businesses. She most appreciates the networking opportunities and encourages young professionals to avail themselves of the chance to interact with other talented individuals.
"It is very important to have mentors," says Mead, who heads organizations specializing in construction, project management, and product importing-exporting. "It is always great for young professionals to hear from other people who are on the same career path."
