Student leaders say people are the best part of getting involved

Center for Student Involvement recognizes juniors Jordan Letendre and Michelle Thompson.

Bryant's Center for Student Involvement has recognized Jordan Letendre '10 (Spencer, MA) and Michelle Thompson '10 (Norwood, MA) with CSI Spotlight Awards. The honor is given out every other week to students who are dedicated and committed to enhancing campus life at Bryant.

Letendre says the best part of getting involved is the people he has met and the opportunities that came about from being active on campus. "I will leave the University a better person than when I arrived," he says.

He has most enjoyed his work as a member of the Student Senate, where he is a member of the Ways and Means committee and was a co-chair of Parents and Family Weekend. "The Student Senate has allowed me to interact with so many people and organizations," says Letendre, a financial services concentrator who hopes to work in the investment and wealth management industry after graduation.

All of the different activities he has been a part of have helped him enhance his communication skills and ability to work effectively in a group. "Most importantly, I have learned the importance of working in a team to accomplish common goals," says Letendre, who is also a Bryant Experience leader.

His advice to students: Take advantage of the multitude of programs that take place in the classroom, on campus, and in the community. "Getting involved is a great way to meet new people," he says. "It will open the doors to many opportunities for you along the way."

"Something special"

Thompson says that she might not have had the good fortune of getting to know so many fellow students, faculty, staff, and administrators if she wasn't involved. "I have met so many amazing people who I may not otherwise have known," she says.

One of her favorite extracurricular activities has been her work with the Student Arts and Speaker Series (learn more about SASS), which was created at the beginning of the semester to bring speakers and performers to campus. So far, the group has hosted filmmaker Morgan Spurlock of "Super Size Me" fame; Capitol Steps, a group of former congressional staffers who created a comedy troupe; and the founders of the Web design firm bobdonpaul.com.

"My involvement with SASS has been something special," says Thompson, who is the student chair of the group. "I am privileged to work with such a wonderful committee, and we've brought some very entertaining and diverse events to campus so far."

In addition to her work with SASS, Thompson is a special events co-chair on the Student Programming Board (learn more about SBP), and a member of the CSI's Leadership Development Team.

Her long list of commitments has helped her learn the important skill of multitasking. "Learning how to manage my time between academics and extracurricular activities has been very valuable," says Thompson, a marketing concentrator who would like to work in marketing or public relations after graduation.

Thompson encourages students to join a group that helps build a foundation for the future. "Remember that everything you do here at Bryant can really help you after you walk through the Archway on Commencement day," she says.
