Bryant students inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Alpha Theta

National honor societies recognize student leaders and academic excellence in history.

Earlier this semester, two groups of students earned the distinction of being installed in a national honor society. In mid-October, Bryant inducted its fourth class of student leaders into Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), a national leadership honor society Earlier in the semester, Bryant recognized its charter members of Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) for their excellence in the study of history.

In addition to the recent induction ceremonies, PAT members will wear a special red sash and ODK members will display green and white cords with their graduation regalia on Commencement Day.

In its fourth year at Bryant, ODK is planning to conduct leadership workshops, host guest speakers on campus, create a newsletter to highlight the work of its members, and spearhead community service activities. The organization is led by President Matt Buttaro '09 (Walpole MA), Vice President Kristen Collins '09 (Huntington Station, NY), Secretary Emlyee Sidera '09 (Northford, CT), and Treasurer Jenna Coates '09 (Wethersfield, CT).

The national arm of the leadership honor society sponsors annual conferences that bring together students from around the country. Last summer, Brian Robinson '09 (Poland, ME) was the only student from New England selected to take part in "Campus Leaders Today, Community Leaders Tomorrow." The program encouraged the participants to take active leadership roles in nonprofit organizations. (To learn more, visit ODK.)

"ODK allows student leaders from all areas of campus life the opportunity to get to know people they otherwise might not have had the chance to meet," says Buttaro. "It is also important for the campus as a whole to recognize the accomplishments of its many student leaders and the positive impact they have on the Bryant community."

Phi Alpha Theta recognizes excellence in history

Earlier this semester, Bryant installed the charter members of its chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society.

To be eligible students must complete at least 12 semester hours in history with a grade point average of 3.1, have an overall GPA of 3.0, and be in the top 35 percent of their class. Membership in Phi Alpha Theta is not limited to history majors. (To learn more, visit PAT.)

Developing a chapter of Phi Alpha Theta will help enhance the reputation of Bryant's history program and increase the exposure of the University's College of Arts and Sciences, says Brad Martin, associate professor of history and social sciences and the faculty adviser of Bryant's chapter.

One of the most important benefits of acceptance into the honor society is the opportunity for students to present their research at academic conferences, he says. "This is a valuable forum to help students compile a significant record of achievement and increase their desirability to perspective graduate schools."
