Aspiring journalist Jessica Miles '09 is published in online magazine
Communication major sharpens her skills as the news editor for the student-run Archway newspaper.
Jessica Miles '09 (West Greenwich, RI) likes the freedom that comes with creative writing.
"Writing provides an open forum and can be taken in an infinite number of directions," says Miles, a communication major. "I love how writing allows me to express myself."
She experienced a special thrill this summer when an article she wrote, "A Shattering of Voices: A Generation's Silence," was published in Bread & Circus, an online magazine. She is in the process of submitting a second article to Bread & Circus.
"Having my article published was beyond exciting for me," she says. "I really wanted the piece to speak to my peers, and I received so much great feedback from them."
Hot off the press
To continue to gain hands-on experience, Miles recently became the news editor for the student-run newspaper, The Archway.
So far this year, she has written an opinion piece about the media's role in the presidential election, an article about a Web site redesign for the Office of Academic Records and Registration, and a front-page story about the campus visit by Rhode Island native Danny Smith, executive producer and writer for the hit television show Family Guy.
"I truly enjoy the interviewing process because it allows me to learn new things about a variety of topics," says Miles, who will be attending the Associated Collegiate Press Fall Conference in Kansas City, MO at the end of October.
After graduation, she hopes to write for a travel magazine, which would allow her to share her experiences while exploring the world.
"One of my favorite parts of the journalism field is how writing can take a person anywhere and introduce them to a variety of experiences, which are often once-in-a-lifetime journeys," she says.
A well-rounded education
Miles says Susan Baran, a lecturer in the communication department, has been instrumental in her growth as a writer.
"Professor Baran continues to be a mentor for whom I have the greatest respect," says Miles. "I look forward to continuing to work with her and developing my craft further."
Miles transferred to Bryant in January 2008. She was attracted by the growing communication department and the opportunity to develop a background in both communication and business.
"I thought Bryant offered plenty of opportunities for me to develop my writing skills inside and outside the classroom," she says.
One characteristic that differentiates the Bryant experience is the focus on leadership development, which is essential for any career, she says.
"Bryant makes it a point to give students a voice, which is why they are so passionate about their work and why they are so involved in classes and campus life," says Miles.
