Bryant welcomes new students into the Honors program

Gifted incoming students are invited to take part in the progam.

Each year, gifted incoming students are invited to take part in the honors program. Bryant welcomes another group of top students this fall, who will begin the first of eight courses they need to graduate with an honors program distinction.

To be eligible for the program, an incoming student must have at least a 1200 SAT score, be in the top 20 percent of his or her high school graduating class, and have a high school grade point average of at least 3.6.

Ken Sousa, assistant professor of computer information systems and the new Honors Program coordinator, described the program as a "personalized, unique experience" that allows students to delve deeper into subject matter, work closely with faculty, and form a close-knit network of friends."

Instead of looking at the honors program as more work, students should see it as a different experience that can define them as a person," said Sousa.

Sousa compared the in-depth and thought-provoking business and liberal arts courses to an athlete training for a competition. While the work is challenging and involved, there is a great potential for payback in the end. "We want the students to win," he said.

In order to graduate with the Honors Program distinction, students must earn a cumulative GPA of 3.40 and an honors GPA of 3.20. They are also required to write a senior thesis. "The program focuses not on what you have done but what you can be," said Sousa.
